New York State Food Stamps
The widely popular Food Stamp program offered throughout the United States is more formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This important program provides money to purchase basic groceries and other food items to millions of adults and children each year. Statistics show that more than half of all recipients of the program are kids under the age of 18. The popularity of Food Stamps has risen dramatically in many areas of the United States admit hard-hit during the recession the country is faced in recent years. How To Qualify
In order to qualify for New York State Food Stamps you must show the New York Department of Social Services that you meet both an asset and income eligibility requirement. Under the asset eligibility rules, households are not allowed to have more than $2000 in “countable assets.” Just about anything that a person commonly count as an asset falls under the “countable asset” umbrella. However, there are two key exclusions to this definition, which are: your personal residence that you own and (in most cases) one automobile for the household. For households that have a member over the age of 65 or someone who is been declared disabled under the Social Security Administrations SSDI (i.e., disability insurance benefits program) rules the $2000 threshold was increased to $3000.
The New York State Food Stamps program also requires applicants to show that there household income falls under certain income guidelines that are set forth by the New York State Department of Social Services. There are two aspects to this income test. First, any households applying for compensation must have a gross income that falls under New York State’s Food Stamp gross income guidelines. If the household incomes under these thresholds it can then deduct out certain expenses, a predetermined standard deduction dollar amount, and a general 20% deduction of gross income to calculate a net income amount. If this amount is also under net income guidelines that you will pass the income test. The income allow for each household varies depending on how many members of the household there are. Furthermore, the threshold numbers are changed on a regular basis and should be reviewed before you submit an application for New York State Food Stamps.
If you meet both the asset and income guidelines for Food Stamps, you should submit an application to the New York Department of Social Services. They have offices throughout the state, including several in New York City (“NYC Food Stamps”).
